Any Behavior is Possible for Your Child

It's all about teaching them in a way they can learn.

My Story

It's a reoccurring nightmare I seem to have every August before the start of the new school year.

I’m late to work, I walk into my classroom, and my kids are all out of control.

We’re talking standing on the desks, throwing things across the room, screaming- like some scene out of a movie.

And, of course, my principal has popped in for an evaluation of my teaching.

It’s next level stress- pretty sure I really test the strength of my teeth-grinding mouthguard on those nights!

At the root of this nightmare is a deep fear.

I’m terrified of losing control over my students.

I’m supposed to be in charge of all these little pumpkins.

They need to feel in their bones that they’re safe with me, that I can handle anything one of them throws my way.

You know how kids test a babysitter?

Imagine 28 kids testing me in those first days of school.

Yikes. I feel my trap muscles tensing right now just thinking about it!

So how do I get over this fear?

Well, let’s be real. The fear never goes away.

What helps me feel like the calm, confident leader of my children is the consistencies I’ve discovered over the years- the things that seem to help me shape behavior, no matter who the child is.

Now, believe me, I have had failures with behavior-shaping! Oh, so many failures.

If you are a parent or teacher feeling like you haven’t figured something out yet- I see you.

I’m right there with you. It doesn’t matter that you haven’t figured everything out- I don’t think you ever do.

I mean, just when something you did works, then the child’s circumstances seem to change, and you have to pivot your approach!

What matters is that we're trying.

On one side of a coin is the fear I feel about losing control and ending up with that chaotic scene from my nightmare.

On the other side of the coin is a sense of responsibility to keep my kids physically and emotionally safe- you know, so their sweet brains can get some serious learning and growing accomplished!

These feelings inspire me to look deeper into my kids’ behavior (what are they trying to tell me?), be more creative with how I can respond, and get to work.
